Euro 7 Implementation Landscape: Comprehensive Updates Across EU and UK Jurisdictions

As the automotive industry prepares for the next generation of emission standards, both the European Union and the United Kingdom are advancing significant regulatory initiatives related to Euro 7 implementation.
EU Type Approval Framework Update for Euro 7 Requirements
The European Commission has initiated an update to Annex II of Regulation (EU) 2018/858 to introduce Euro 7 references into the type approval framework. This initiative encompasses four key Euro 7 requirements:
· In-vehicle battery durability requirements,
· Electric vehicle range at low temperature,
· Electric vehicle system power requirements, and
· Brake particle emissions requirements.
Additionally, this update includes revisions to the list of UN Regulations recognized as equivalent for EU type-approval purposes.
This amendment will enter into force 20 days after publication in the Official Journal of the European Union.
The consultation deadline for stakeholder input was 17 April 2026.

EU Amendment to Brake Particle Emission Testing Protocols
The European Commission is proposing a targeted amendment to Regulation (EU) 2024/1257 (Euro 7) to update testing conditions for brake particle emission limits. The amendment focuses specifically on modifications to Annex III, Table 4, replacing the reference to UN GTR 24 with UN Regulation 179 for laboratory measurement of brake emissions. This UN R.179 was adopted during the 198th session of WP.29 and is expected to enter into force in September 2026.
The consultation period closed on 17 April 2026.

UK Public Consultation on Euro 7 Adoption and Enhanced Requirements
In parallel with the harmonization on Euro 7 in EU, the United Kingdom government has launched a comprehensive public consultation to gather input on updating minimum emission standards for new road vehicles in Great Britain. This consultation explores three main areas requiring public feedback:
· Whether to adopt the new Euro 7 emissions standard for cars, vans, and heavy-duty vehicles;
· Possible changes to in-service conformity requirements that would enhance monitoring of vehicle emissions under real driving conditions;
· The introduction of new technical requirements including battery health monitoring systems.
Overall, the document is part of a consultation process in which the government gathers feedback before making regulatory decisions.
The period for submit comments ends on 25 May 2026.

General provisions for vehicles of category M2 and M3

The Egyptian Organization for Standardization and Quality published a draft for a Regulation on the approval of vehicles of category M2 or M3. The primary objectives and rationale for this Regulation are to establish safety requirements and quality requirements for these vehicles categories.
The Regulation would apply to every single-deck, double-deck, rigid or articulated vehicle of M2 or M3 category.
The requirements and testing procedures are based on the UN R.107 on approval of M2 and M3 vehicles.
The period for submit comments ends on 18 May 2026.

AIS 175 - Testing and procedures related to Worldwide Harmonized Light vehicle test procedures (WLTP)

The draft for the new Standard AIS 175 on testing and procedures related to Worldwide Harmonized Light vehicles test procedures (WLTP). WLTP was developed by the UN to create a globally harmonized procedure that reduces differences between laboratory and real-world driving emissions.
Central aspects:
- WLTC test cycles classified into 3 classes according to power-to-mass ratio, with low, medium, high, and extra-high phases.
- Type I test: gaseous emissions, particulate matter, CO2, fuel efficiency, and energy consumption.
- Type IV test: evaporative emissions (hot soak and diurnal losses).
- RDE test: real driving emissions verification with portable PEMS system.
- OBD system: on-board monitoring of pollution control devices.
- Target lifetime: 160,000 km with applicable deterioration factors.
Includes special requirements for pure electric vehicles (PEV), hybrids (HEV), plug-in hybrids (OVC-HEV), and fuel cell vehicles (FCHV), with test procedures in charge depleting (CD) and charge sustaining (CS) conditions.
